Background
This Government study is being run by Sport England and was developed with the Department for Education, the Department of Health and Social Care, and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. It is a survey of children and young people (5-16 years) administered through schools which measures levels of participation in sport and physical activity and volunteering. It also includes measures for wellbeing as well as attitudes towards sport and physical activity and the findings are being used to shape future policy and investment in school sport.
Schools which take part will also receive a Healthy Schools Rating providing they complete the minimum number of surveys including a teacher survey.

Active Lives Children and Young People 2020 -21 Report
The latest results from Sport England’s Active Lives Children and Young People Survey highlight the on-going impact Covid-19 has had on physical activity levels in Kent. It shows that only 41.7% of children and young people are meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines of taking part in sport and physical activity for an average of 60 minutes or more every day. This is a 6.3% decrease in the number of active children and young people compared to the previous 12 months.
The data also shows that 34% of Kent’s children and young people are physically inactive meaning they are doing less than an average of 30 minutes a day. This is a 6% increase in the number of inactive children and young people compared to the previous 12 months.
The Sport England Research also shows:
- Restrictions during the pandemic resulted in reduced levels of activity
- Active children do better at school in attainment and achievement
- Those from the least affluent families remain the least active and this gap has widened since the start of the pandemic
- Only 36% of Black children are getting active compared to 45% of all children and young people.
- Boys activity levels have decreased to the same level as girls.
- The numbers taking part in fitness and gym are increasing, whilst team sports reduced but are showing signs of increasing again
- Fewer children learnt to swim overall and only a third from lowest income groups can swim 25m on their own.
- Children reported lower levels of enjoyment overall, and less confidence – this shows there is a need to focus on increasing physical literacy.
- Confidence to get involved
- Competence of basic skills
- Understanding benefits
- Knowledge of the ‘how’s and ‘where’s
- Enjoyment when they’re there
